John Maise and Andrew Gordon Speak at the People’s Law School
On October 9, 2018, the Michigan Association for Justice People’s Law School held a presentation on Labor and Employment Law presented by our Attorneys John Maise and Andrew Gordon. The People’s Law School provides educational seminars helping people become familiar with their legal rights and navigate the law. Sessions are held across the state and feature some of the most well-known and respected legal experts in Michigan, covering topics ranging from Personal Injury and Auto No-Fault, Immigration Rights and Marijuana Law. These presentations are meant to shed light on some of the less intuitive aspects of the law.
For many people, a job or career defines their identity. In a very real way, the trappings of Labor and Employment law and the rights available to employees in the workplace are central to many of the problems and crises people face in their everyday life. If my loved one falls sick, do I qualify to take Family Medical Leave Act leave to help take care of them? If I am asked to resign by my Employer instead of being terminated, will I still qualify for unemployment to help take care of my family? Should I join the local union, what can they do for me? These are very real questions faced by workers and families in Michigan every day. John Maise and Andrew Gordon presented on this critical area of law and provided keen insight to help people go into the world with a better understanding on how the law impacts their own livelihood.
John and Andrew covered a variety of topics including the role that unions play in the workforce, talking about the limitations of At-Will Employment, and what rights and responsibilities unions have with respect to both employers and employees. Among other topics, they provided guidance to help people understand their rights available under the Family Medical Leave Act, and shed some light on common misconceptions with claiming Unemployment in Michigan. They presented at the East Lansing Hanna Community Center and were well received by the audience, demonstrating White Schneider PC’s extensive knowledge in the field of Labor and Employment law. If you have questions or concerns as to whether you are being treated fairly at work, of if you feel that your employment rights have been violated, it’s important to speak with a professional, such as those at White Schneider, so that you can get on point advice to deal with your specific situation.
